Cinco De Mayo at Abilene Zoo

Cinco de mayo celebrations are being held all over the Big Country today and one included four-legged animals that also have ties to the culture.

The Abilene Zoo displayed some of the many animals that thrive in Mexico today to celebrate Mexico's wildlife.

They were each identified and had zoo keepers on hand to host talks and shared facts about the Mexican species.

This was the first official Cinco de Mayo celebration ever held at the Abilene Zoo.

"They'll be able to see a variety of species we actually have several including ocelots, mountain lions, beaded lizards, rattlesnakes, just a wide variety of animals  that live both in the united states and in Mexico," said Bill Gersonde, the zoo's director.

Most of the animals at the zoo that are native to Mexico come from the more dry and warmer areas that are similar to the conditions here in Abilene.

Zoo officials say they want to help educate visitors on the similar wildlife that the key city shares with its neighboring country.
