People All Across Commemorate a Historic Highway

By: Natalie Ferrari
Updated: May 5, 2012
Today's Bankhead Highway Drive kicked off in Ranger early this morning, where about 29 cars drove along the historic highway through Eastland and Cisco, before wrapping up in Baird. The purpose of the drive was to commemorate one of the first coast to coast highways, connecting from Washington, D.C. to San Diego. The stretch of highway was originally mapped out in 1921.

"The bankhead is very important to our community" says Joanne Moomaw of the Callahan County Historic Commission. "We have, in Callahan county, one of the longest stretch's of the original pavement on the bankhead. We hope to preserve that, commemorate it and mark it."

Plans are already in the works to put together this highway drive, early next year.
