It may not look like much, but this site will soon provide essential medical care.

It's something that wasn't available in Eastland.

"We did not have a dialysis facility in Eastland County," said Ted Matthews, Eastland Memorial Hospital administrator.

Until now.

The Eastland Memorial Hospital's new dialysis center is well on its way to providing treatments that residents normally had to travel to areas like Abilene to get.

"Which is 60 miles one way 120 miles round trip, they're having to do that three days a week," said Matthews.

The need was so great, many times other locals had to chip in and help take patients for treatments.

"We actually had individuals that owned four wheel drive vehicles that were taking our dialysis patients to Abilene to their appointments," said the administrator.

However, come this august, they'll need to travel no more.

The 3200 sq. ft. facility is already under construction.

It will provide care for 12 patients at a time, or about 60 patients a day from all around the Eastland area.

Noted Matthews, "The county to the north being Stevens, Erath County to the south, Shackleford county."

For many its a project that's long past due.

Now thanks to community donations, the close to million dollar project is becoming a reality.

"Everywhere you go in the community people are talking about the new dialysis facility, a lot of excitement," said Matthews.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the site will be held Friday, May 12 at 10 a.m. at 2300 W. Commerce St. in Eastland.
