According to the Abilene Police Department, vehicle burglaries are on the rise, and many of them happen along the Winters Freeway.

"Anything that has to be left in the car goes into my glove box that has a lock on it, and only this key can open it," said Korri Robertson, Abilene resident.

She said she hides her valuables and locks her doors because she knows there are people out there looking to take advantage of those who make themselves easy targets.

"Parking lots are a great place for burglars to find their wares," says officer George Spindler, APD. He explained that it's no longer a deterrent to just lock your car.

Winters Freeway provides a couple of things for burglars: their choice of vehicles, and a quick getaway.

Officer Spindler said, "They're going to use the path of least resistance. They're going to look at major roads that are traveled, and if they have easy access out of that area or town, they are going to do that."

Just last weekend two burglars were caught doing exactly that. They got off the Winters Fwy, broke into a truck, then they were on their way again.

Thanks to a witness, they were arrested, but that won't always be the case.

"There has been a tremendous amount of cars that have been left unlocked during these burglary motor vehicle cases that we're investigating", said Spindler.
