JEFFERSON CITY,
Mo. - With no other team making a serious charge up the leaderboard at
the NCAA Division II South Central / Midwest Super Region golf
tournament, the ACU Wildcats had a shot to make up some
serious ground on the leaders from Central Missouri.
But even though
they posted a better score in Tuesday's second round than they did in
Monday's opening round, the Wildcats still didn't make up much ground on
the top five. After shooting a 16-over-par
304 on Monday, the Wildcats followed that with a 7-over-par 295 for a
599 score. ACU enters Wednesday's final round at 23-over-par and in
12th place.
Central Missouri
leads the way at 1-under-par 575 through two rounds, 15 strokes ahead of
Central Oklahoma and Washburn, both of which are 14-over-par 590
through 36 holes. Indianapolis is in fourth at
15-over-par 591, while Grand Valley State is in fifth at 16-over-par
592.
The top five
teams and the top two individuals not with a team from each regional
(regardless of region) will advance to the national championship
tournament, which will be played May 15-19, at The Cardinal
Club in Simpsonville, Ky., as part of the 2012 NCAA Division II Spring
Championships Festival. The Festival will be hosted by Bellarmine
University the Louisville Sports Commission.
The Wildcats will
have to put together a special day on Wednesday in order to make the
field for the national tournament. They are seven strokes out of fifth
place, a spot that would give them a return
trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament.
Junior Alex
Carpenter played much better Tuesday than he did on Monday, shooting a
2-under-par 70, seven strokes better than his opening-round 77 on
Monday. Carpenter is tied for 15th in the individual
standings at 3-over-par 147.
Freshman Corbin
Renner shot a second-round 76 and is tied for 37th at 6-over-par 150,
while freshman Luke Carpenter shot a second-round 76 and is tied for
70th at 10-over-par 154. Trey Sullivan is tied
for 70th as well after his second-round 73 left him at 154.
Kyle Dickerson is tied for 80th at 11-over-par 155 after shooting an 8-over-par 80 on Tuesday.
