Official Says Snyder Water Taste Getting Back to Normal

The taste of Snyder's water is getting back to normal, now that the pipeline to pump water from O.H. Ivie into Snyder is online.

The water already is hitting taps and meters in Snyder and residents are now getting a blend of the remaining water from Lake J.B. Thomas and water from the O.H. Ivie Reservoir.

Water Superintendent Chris Woodard said that the pipeline went online over the weekend, and that the smell and taste of the water is improving. He said he is not sure of the percentage of water from Ivie in the blend, but noted the blend consists of half or more water from the reservoir.

Water is still being pulled from Thomas, and officials have indicated that they will continue to pull water from it until it runs dry.

"It's going to take a while to get (Thomas water) out of the system, but we already see a big improvement at the water plant," Woodard said.

The taste and smell of the water frustrated many local residents, many of whom described the taste as dirty or having a chemical aftertaste. The water department received numerous complaints.

The remaining water from Lake Thomas does not contain any sediment, but the odor and taste of the sediments stayed with the water even after treatment.

The lake, which is now just 0.8 percent full, will run dry sometime this summer, with estimates from the Colorado River Municipal Water District indicating that the lake will be gone by June.
