APD Welcomes New K-9 Officer

By: News Release-Abilene Police Department
Updated: May 10, 2012
The Abilene Police Department has issued the following news release regarding the newest addition to the force:

The latest member of the Abilene Police Department has four legs and received his training in Germany. Thor, our new K-9, was deemed fit for duty by a local veterinarian and officially accepted by the Department on April 30.

Previously, we had announced that H-E-B had partnered with APD to provide funding for our latest police service animal (K-9). Thor is replacing K-9 Diablo who was retired from active duty due to a debilitating health condition. He will be partnered with Diablo's current handler, Officer Joshua New.

Thor's training is progressing. He comes to Abilene with two certifications from Germany which will reduce his training time from eight weeks to four. He is currently being trained in narcotic detection and obedience.
