One Abilene woman found a unique mother's day gift this morning.
Her family saw a baby deer on the side of the road, and decided to pick it up when it appeared that it was left alone.
"It was laying curled there. I felt bad for it cause it looked like it had been abandoned. And it didn't have the strength to stand up or nothing, so we picked it up," said Ruby Orduna.
Orduna said she is looking for someone to take care of the deer, but will tend to it in the mean time.

Would be very interested in taking the baby deer. My friends mother lives out of town and has many animals she takes care of. She would be willing to go get a permit if necessary. You can contact my friend at 325-428-9588 if you are still looking for some one to care for it.

Oh dear. I hate to say this because I know she only wanted to help, but people should know: it is illegal to posses wildlife with out the proper permits in the state of Texas. Furthermore, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife, 40% or MORE of the "abandoned" fawns are not abandoned by the mother, who is probably hiding nearby. The fawn may appear unresponsive because it is trying not to move hoping you don't see him! Here is what the park service says: Abandoned deer fawns: In Texas, it is very common for people to encounter seemingly orphaned or abandoned deer. Mother deer typically leave their fawns bedded down while they are away foraging. If the fawn is not crying, is not covered with fire ants, the eyes are not swollen and there are no visible wounds, do not handle or disturb it. Your presence will only cause unnecessary stress for the fawn.
