The Cougars entered the Spring with 12 starting spots up for grabs. The highest profile job that needs to be filled is quarterback.
That job is not really up for grabs, but new starter Lorenzo Joe was stepping into Clayton Nicholas' footsteps.
Head coach Todd Moebes likes what he sees in Joe. "I don't think he has a nervous bone in his body," he said. "He's just excited about the opportunity to go out there and compete, and have a little bit of anxiety about you, being a new position, but it's not something that's foreign to him. He did it last year in preparation of being the backup quarterback. He had some opportunities to be the quarterback."
Moebes added, "He's doing a great job of managing our offense and running it and being a leader in the huddle and taking control of things. Everything has gotten better. He's a kid that makes a mistake and is able to learn from the mistake and doesn't make it twice."
The Cougars have practice on Wednesday and then close the spring with the Red/Blue Scrimmage at Shotwell Stadium's brand new FieldTurf. Coach Moebes wants fans to come out to the game on Thursday night, and after the game, you can walk on the new turf.
