Local law enforcement officers are scheduled to join with representatives of the Texas Department of Transportation to begin a new program to encourage more people to wear their seat belts.

TxDOT representatives will be at the Abilene Zoo on Thursday for a demonstration with a two-ton pick-up truck dangling from a seat belt.

The goal is to get more voluntary compliance of the seat belt laws for the drivers and passengers in pickup trucks.

Texas law requires the drivers and passengers in pickup trucks to wear their seat belts on public streets.
