ACU Women's Basketball Coach Starts Spreading The Word

By: ACU Athletics
Updated: May 16, 2012
HASKELL - New ACU women's basketball coach Julie Goodenough promised when she was hired in March that she would be out in the community promoting her team to the youth of the Big Country.

She got started with that on Monday when she went back to her hometown of Haskell to speak to a group of 5th-grade students on Career Day.  Goodenough spoke to more than 50 students, a combination of the classes taught by Mrs. Jennifer Roewe and Mrs. Tammy Wallace.

Goodenough not only spoke to the group about her upcoming summer camp (details below), but also about life's calling.  As she noted in her introductory press conference, Goodenough believes her job is to be more than a basketball coach, but to also be a Christian mentor and role model to her players and those in the community watching her program.

It's not a role she takes lightly.

"I am always excited to speak in the community to really any age group but I do really enjoy visiting the schools in the Big Country," Goodenough said.  "We have a great opportunity as coaches and student-athletes to impact the youth in this area by getting to know them and being Christian mentors for them at their schools, as well as at our games and summer camps."

The Wildcats' new mentor, however, also took time to promote the Champions Girls' Basketball Camp, which will be similar to Camp Goodenough that she directed for almost 20 years.

The day camp for K-5th grade is June 11-14 from 9 a.m.-noon each day, while the day camp for 6th-9th grade is June 11-14 from 2-5 p.m.

The overnight camp for 7th-12th grades is June 21, while the Team Camp for varsity and junior varsity teams will be Aug. 1-3.

All camp information and registration can be done at http://www.acu.edu/events/sports-camps/basketball-girls.html.

"I love summer camps and hope to grow our girl's basketball camps at ACU like I was able to with Camp Goodenough the past 18 summers," she said.  "The name has changed but the quality of instruction and fun in a Christian atmosphere will be the same."
