"Hardly a day passes that someone doesn't ask me about the state of Lincoln Middle School," says Dr. Heath Burns, Superintendent of Abilene Independent School District.

About two months  ago the Board of Trustees for Abilene ISD took action to give Lincoln Middle School to the city for considerations.

"If and when Lincoln is renovated and repaired, specifically the auditorium, the school district would have opportunity to use it," says Burns.

Leaving the ball is in the city of Abilene's court.

"No decision will be made probably for quite some time as we contemplate all the options," says Stormy Higgins, a City Council member.

However, AISD probably is not going to be waiting forever for them to make that decision.

Burns says, "In the mean time we've had other parties that are interested that are interested in the facility. Several have toured the facility."

Superintendent burns says he is almost positive the property would sell if the asking price was significantly lower than the original half million, however, he doesn't think that's in the best interest of the facility.

"I think our community is very interested in it and want to see something done that preserves the history and the legacy of Lincoln Middle School," says Burns.

And if that "something" ends up coming from the city, the residents of Abilene may just have to wait a little bit longer.

Higgins says, "We'll make a decision when we feel like we have imbalanced how we can preserve the past and use the building for a new purpose that would enhance the community."
