The Abilene Fire Department has issued the following news release regarding the SUV accident on Interstate 20 this morning that left one person dead:

At 10 a.m. today, Abilene police and fire units were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a sports utility vehicle in the creek near mile marker 286C on Interstate 20. The vehicle entered the creek area between the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes at a high rate of speed, coming to rest on its side. Firefighters arrived less than five minutes after the call was received and immediately set about removing the victims from the wreckage and treating them for injuries. A young child was easily removed from the wreckage but the five adults were removed using the Jaws of Life and other rescue techniques. Four of the adults were transported to a local hospital with critical injuries; one adult died at the scene. The child was also transported to the hospital with the extent of injuries unknown.

It took almost an hour to transport all victims to the hospital. Fire Department personnel remained on scene until noon; Abilene Police Department investigators were still at the scene as of this report.

Twenty-one Abilene firefighters responded to the call, including two engines, two ladders, a heavy rescue and support personnel. Metro Care Services and the Abilene Police Department responded with numerous units and personnel.

It sure is a good thing all of those fire fighters were on scene to save all of those peoples' lives so that us "Ambulance attendants" could drive them to the hospital... PD is the "Bold", FD is the "Brave", and EMS is the "Forgotten"... good reporting!
