Yesterday at about 9:00 p.m., Officer Matthew Allen was dispatched to a theft call at a business in the 1700 block of US Highway 351. APD was notified that a theft had just occurred involving a victim's cellphone. A description of the suspect vehicle and its license plate number was provided to APD dispatch. APD dispatch quickly ascertained vehicle registration information for the suspect vehicle and broadcasted that information to all officers. Sgt. Jason Haak was near the known residence for the possible suspect and he responded to that residence in the 2500 block of South 18th Street. Sgt. Haak arrived at the known residence and observed the suspect vehicle parked. A male suspect was contacted and found to be in possession of the stolen cellphone valued at approximately $400. During a search of the suspect, a small quantity of a white powdery substance was located and tested positive for cocaine. The suspect was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) and for an enhanced misdemeanor charge of theft due to a previous conviction for theft.
Last night at about 11:40, Officer Chris Volirakis was dispatched to a disturbance call at a residence in the 2800 block of Beech Street. APD was notified by a calling party that she had been struck by her husband and that she was outdoors with her children awaiting police. Officer Volirakis' investigation revealed that the calling party and her husband had been in a verbal altercation that turned physical and led to the husband allegedly assaulting her. The female victim had visible injuries to her face that were consistent with the alleged assault. During the investigation, the male suspect was observed by Officer Volirakis driving back to the residence. Officer Volirakis contacted the suspect. A records check revealed that the suspect had previous convictions for driving with an invalid license. The suspect was arrested for assault family violence and for driving while license invalid.
