Snyder Well Under Daily Water Restriction Level

By: Snyder Daily News
Updated: May 23, 2012
The City of Snyder has been well under its daily water restriction level the past two weeks, but that and the recent rains did not slow the inevitable extinction of Lake J.B. Thomas.

Snyder has an average daily use of 1.6 million gallons per day (mgd) over the previous two weeks, which is roughly 200,000 gallons per day lower than its limit.

The Colorado River Municipal Water District (CRMWD) reduced Snyder's daily limit to 1.8 mgd in anticipation that the worst drought in Texas history will continue through the year.

Last summer, Snyder's limit was 2.5 mgd.

Of the CRMWD member cities, Odessa has the highest water usage, averaging 12.9 mgd last week.

The second highest-use city, San Angelo, averaged 11.3 mgd last week.

The recent precipitation did not provide any relief to Lake J.B. Thomas, with the lake just 0.93 percent full, after being at 0.96 percent last week. About two inches of rain was recorded at the Big Spring/Odessa intake station last week.

On May 21, 2011, the lake was 3.97 full, but last summer's extreme temperatures and arid conditions accelerated the falling lake levels.

The lake is expected to be completely dry sometime this summer. Earlier estimates from CRMWD officials indicated that water would run out sometime in May or June.
