Praire Dogs Lose Fourth Straight

By: Abilene Prairie Dogs Press Release
Updated: June 2, 2012

HARLINGEN, TX - The Prairie Dogs came to southern Texas with the hopes of building on a highly competitive series with the San Angelo Colts and jumping back above .500. That goal became lofty after the Whitewings handled the Prairie Dogs for the second straight night at Harlingen Field. With single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, the white-hot club from Harlingen won its fifth consecutive game with a 5-2 victory on Friday night.

Woods Fines made his second start of the season for Abilene and gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the first when Kyle Nichols dropped a fly ball in left field. The Prairie Dogs tied the game in the second when K.C. Judge scored on a wild pitch. However, the Whitewings snatched the lead back in the home half of the second on a sacrifice fly from James Mays.

The Prairie Dogs proved to be a resilient bunch in the early going as Matt Thompson singled into right-field to tie the game at two in top of the third. However, the story on Friday night was the work of Coleman Stephens. The big right-hander from Amarillo fanned five batters and allowed only two runs before departing with two outs in the seventh.

Without Joe Weik or Reggie Williams in the lineup, Abilene sputtered to their fourth consecutive loss. Fines lasted into the seventh inning and allowed four runs (three earned) before Todd Weldon came on to record the final six outs of the game.

Newly acquired Jordan Marks made his first professional appearance and went 0-3 after landing in southern Texas only a few hours before the first pitch of Friday's game.

The Prairie Dogs and Whitewings will wrap up a three game series on Saturday night at Harlingen Stadium. You can hear the game on 106.9 KLGD beginning with the pre-game show at 6:55
