Snyder City Council Tables Pet Ordinance Again

Updated: June 5, 2012
For the second month in a row, after many of the same arguments, the Snyder City Council again decided against taking action on a proposed pet ordinance at Monday's meeting.

By a 5-1 vote, the council again tabled the second reading of the ordinance that would set restrictions on the number of animals permitted within a single household and provide for the removal of animals in the event the pet owners were convicted of violating one of the city's pet control ordinances.

Abel DeLoera cast the dissenting vote.

Snyder Police Chief Terry Luecke told the council that the animal control officers were trying to make the ordinance as "workable as possible," and that it was needed to address health, noise and smell issues.

He also distributed photos of homes with multiple dogs, showing both good and bad living conditions, taken by the animal control officers.

"You should be able to enjoy going into your own back yard," he said.

Luecke said the city's current ordinances provide penalties, but nothing beyond fines.

"All we can do now is issue tickets," he said. "Many owners pay the fines, but the conditions don't change."
