ACU's Nick Jones Named National and Lone Star Conference Field Athlete Of The Year

ABILENE - For the second time in as many years Abilene Christian senior Nick Jones has been named Field Athlete of the Year by both the Lone Star Conference and the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Jones, who was a unanimous choice for the conference award, recently capped his remarkable Wildcat career by becoming the first male athlete in NCAA history (regardless of division) to win four national titles in the discus. He won the title as a freshman in 2008 and again as a sophomore in 2009 before redshirting in 2010. He returned last year and won his third title in record-setting fashion as his winning mark of 199-4 set a new meet record.

The Amarillo native also placed second in the shot put at the national meet for the second-straight year.

Earlier in the season, Jones was named the LSC's Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete of their championships after winning the shot, placing third in the discus, and sixth in the javelin. He has also been listed this year as receiving mention for The Bowerman, and was previously recognized by the USTFCCCA when the organization selected him as the NCAA DII South Central Men's Field Athlete of the Year.

Jones shattered his personal record in the discus during the regular season at the UTEP Invitational where he posted a distance of 203-3. That effort is the third-best ever recorded in the history of NCAA DII, and was tops among all collegians (regardless of division) in 2012.

Jones will next compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in both the discus and shot put in late June. The top three finishers in each event will represent the U.S. at the 2012 London Games.
