Oakland, Calif. - The Texas Rangers announced this morning that left-handed pitcher Derek Holland has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with left shoulder fatigue. To take his place on the roster, the club has purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Tanner Scheppers (#52) from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room for Scheppers on the 40-man roster, the team has designated left-handed pitcher John Gaub for assignment.
Holland has gone 5-4 with a 5.10 ERA (38 ER/67.0 IP) in 12 games/11 starts for Texas this season. He earned his 5th win on Tuesday night in Oakland, allowing 3 runs in 5.1 innings. This is just his second career stint on the disabled list. The first date Holland would be eligible to return is June 21.
Scheppers, 25, will be available in the bullpen for today's series finale in Oakland, looking to make his major league debut. He has spent the entire season with Round Rock, going 1-2 with 9 saves and a 3.72 ERA (12 ER/29.0 IP) in 25 relief appearances. Pacific Coast League opponents have batted .270 (30-111) with 4 walks, 27 strikeouts, and just 2 home runs. Scheppers is 9-for-12 in save chances this season and has allowed 4 of 11 inherited runners to score. He last pitched on Tuesday vs. Albuquerque, allowing one run in 2.0 innings.
Selected by Texas in the supplemental first round (44th overall) of the 2009 June draft, Scheppers has been a non-roster invitee to major league spring training each of the past three years. He made 7 Cactus League appearances for the Rangers this spring, allowing 6 runs in 8.1 innings. A native of Mission Viejo, Calif., he pitched three seasons at Fresno State, but missed the school's run to the College World Series title in 2008 due to injury.
Gaub, acquired by Texas on a waiver claim from Tampa Bay on May 24, has pitched 4.1 scoreless innings over 5 appearances since joining Round Rock. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Gaub to the minor leagues.
With these moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
