By: Officer George Spindler, APD
Updated: June 8, 2012
Yesterday afternoon at about 12:30, officers with the Abilene Police Dept. were dispatched to a theft in progress. The calling party alerted APD Dispatch that he was following a truck for which he claimed ownership and he believed had been stolen and that it was occupied by two unknown men. The calling party remained on the telephone with 911 call-takers until such time that traffic and patrol units contacted the alleged stolen truck in the 1300 block of Butternut Street. Officers Roy Kirby and Ralph Garcia were part of this traffic stop and their investigation revealed that the calling party was the registered owner of the vehicle. Additionally, they learned that the owner had been advised by an associate that the associate had left the truck at an apartment complex after a failed attempt to repair the vehicle. While Officer Garcia ran records checks, he discovered that the driver of the truck had an outstanding parole warrant for the original charge of robbery. The investigation also revealed that the driver had been allegedly given permission to operate the truck by the owners associate who had left town. The owner chose not to press charges and recovered his vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested on the warrant.

At approximately 8:15 last night, Officer Brittney Martinez was dispatched to an unknown disturbance call at a residence in the1100 block of Victoria Street. APD Dispatch had received a call that became an open-line and from which a disturbance could be heard by the call-taker, including screaming. Officer Martinez arrived at the residence to the sound of loud yelling while approaching the front door of the residence. A female subject met with Officer Martinez while yelling the command for someone to leave. Officer Martinez' investigation revealed that two sisters had got into a verbal altercation that led to violence. The subject alleged that her sister had confronted her and that is when the subject allegedly kicked her sister. Additionally, the violence escalated, including the throwing of objects at the victim's husband. The female subject was arrested for assault family violence.

Minutes after midnight today, Officer Joe Plato observed a motorist driving recklessly while swerving all over the roadway in the area of S. 7th Street and S. Pioneer Drive. Officer Plato contacted the male driver in the 700 block of Buccaneer. During his investigation, he smelled the strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver. The driver became emotional and started crying during this investigation and Officer Plato learned that the driver had consumed alcohol prior to the traffic stop. The driver showed indicators of intoxication and was given field sobriety tests which he failed. The driver agreed to provide a blood sample but attempts to do so were unsuccessful. Though the driver then initially agreed to provide a breath sample at jail, he later refused to do so. The driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
