It was not what a passerby was expecting to see on his way to the store this morning.

"The person who discovered the body was walking to the store, and just happened to come across this", says Sergeant Beard, Abilene Police Department.

APD confirms that 44 year-old Dan Nickerson Jr. was killed early this morning by gun shots. They believe the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday in an alley off N.14th and Mesquite St. This was only a block from Nickerson Jr.'s home.

A neighbor recalls what he heard, "I just sat there waiting to hear something else. And I heard nothing else. It went to total silence. I heard two pops and then it just went silent", says Charles Oliphant.

Nickerson Jr.'s body was found this morning around 11:30 and police were called. His  body was sent off for an autopsy.

"This has always been kind of a working class neighborhood, so you just don't think something like this could occur", says Oliphant.

Nickerson Jr. was last seen by his girlfriend at early Sunday morning.

Police are continuing their investigations and looking for any new information.

Police are asking anyone with details on this case to call Crime Stoppers immediately at 676-TIPS or 676-8477.
