Charles woke up to take his medicine early this morning when he heard gunshots.
"And I just sat there, waiting to hear something else. And I heard nothing else. It went total silence. I heard two pops, and it went silent," he said.
Though he spent part of his childhood in this neighborhood, Charles was still shocked to hear that it happened so close to his home.
"This has always been kind of a working-class neighborhood, and so you just don't think that that sort of thing could occur," Charles explained.
He said the area has always had some trouble, and while he isn't afraid of crime in his area, the homicide doesn't sit well with the neighborhood.
"I'm not going to say that I feel fear. I feel kind of dismay, disgust," he said. "You know, because there are people in this area who have children, and I can't imagine what they must think."
At the end of the day, Charles said it is a tragedy.
"No matter what, whenever you see a situation like this, that's somebody's brother or cousin or son or father or something. And when you look at it in those terms, it still is what it is," said Charles.
Police said that if anyone has any information, to call Crime Stoppers at 676-TIPS or the non-emergency line for APD at 673-8331.
