APD: Drunken Driver Passes Out in Drive-Thru

Saturday morning at about 4:10, Officer Kevin Pruitt was dispatched to a reported drunken driver call at a business in the 3100 block of South 14th Street. Officer Pruitt contacted a male subject inside of a truck parked in the businesses' drive-thru. The subject appeared to be asleep with the vehicle keys in the ignition and while seated behind the steering wheel with his foot on the brake. Officer Pruitt had a difficult time waking the suspect and he detected the strong odor of alcohol coming from the subject. The driver showed indicators of intoxication and was given field sobriety tests which he failed. The investigation also revealed an open container of alcohol in the truck. The subject was arrested for driving while intoxicated with an open container. The subject refused to provide a breath sample.
Sunday at about 6:40 p.m., Officers Mary Guitar and Darrin Ruiz were dispatched to a theft in progress call at a business in the 4700 block of Southwest Drive. APD Dispatch was notified by a loss prevention employee that a theft involving three female suspects was in progress. The suspects were headed to a vehicle before police arrival. The loss prevention employee reported that the theft involved merchandise valued at over $50 and that the suspect vehicle had left the premises of the business. Officer Guitar located the suspect vehicle in the 5000 block of Highway 277 South where she conducted a traffic stop. Just prior to contacting the suspect vehicle, items that appeared to be pieces of small paper were being thrown out of the vehicle by one of the suspects. Three female suspects were contacted during the traffic stop. The loss prevention employee was called out to the scene of the traffic stop to aid in this investigation. During the investigation, alleged stolen merchandise items were openly visible and laying out and accessible to the suspects. The store employee provided detailed information about merchandise items that were removed from their packaging, types of merchandise stolen, and the description of the suspects involved. The investigation further revealed that the passenger throwing out the pieces of paper (suspect #1) was actually destroying merchandise tags. During contact with suspect #1, she provided false identification. A records check quickly revealed why the suspect had lied about her identity; she had outstanding municipal warrants. Suspect #1 was arrested for tampering with evidence, failure to identify, and for her local warrants. Suspect #2 was also a passenger and identified as an involved party criminally responsible for aiding in this theft. Suspect #2 was arrested for theft. Suspect #3 was the driver of the suspect vehicle and she was arrested. During a search of suspect #3, stolen merchandise items were recovered from her person. A records check revealed that suspect #3 had several prior convictions for theft and she arrested on an enhanced felony charge of theft. Approximately $173 of merchandise was recovered during this investigation.
This morning at about 12:15, officers responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 1300 block of Orange Street. A calling party had reported that a known male was at their residence causing problems and that the male subject was an ex-boyfriend of the calling party's daughter. There was a verbal altercation that occurred during the disturbance and the subject was not willing to leave. The subject eventually left after APD Dispatch was notified of the disturbance. The calling party then heard the honking of a horn outdoors and realized that the subject had returned to the residence in the same vehicle he arrived in earlier. The subject was again accompanied by a male associate and the calling party remained indoors. Then the sound of gun fire was reported by a few residents in the area. Officers quickly learned that the subjects fled in a vehicle but that their preliminary investigation did not reveal any injuries to persons or damage to property. The investigation took officers to a residence in the 1500 block of Kirkwood where they were able to locate and contact two male subjects. The investigation revealed that the male subject known to the calling party had fired several rounds into the air outside of the calling party's residence. The handgun used in this offense was surrendered by the subject. The male subject was arrested for discharge of firearm within a municipality.
