By: Snyder Daily News
Updated: June 11, 2012
Snyder Police Department Cpl. Darrell Campbell (left) and Officer Lee Ortiz(right) were awarded the medal of valor Friday at the 2012 Texas Law Enforcement Achievement Awards in Austin.

The ceremony was conducted by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, a regulatory agency that oversees training for state agencies.

The officers were honored for the actions on July 12, 2011, when Campbell was shot answering a call of shots fired. Ortiz returned fire, killing the shooter.

Campbell has been with the Snyder Police Department since Sept. 1, 2009. Prior to that, he was an officer with the Sweetwater Police Department for about six years.

Ortiz has been with the Snyder Police Department since Oct. 23, 2003.

Both men received the medal of valor from the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas last year.
