"I feel safe in Abilene," said Mona Perez.

Mona moved to Abilene a few months ago from Austin. Despite this weekend's homicide, she says that the small town feel of Abilene makes her and her family feel safe.

"I feel your neighbor is taking care of you. I feel people are watching and helping you out here. I don't feel that safety coming from where i was in Austin," she said.

And rightfully so. Since 2008, Abilene has seen 24 homicide cases. When compared to other cities in Texas in the last two years, the number of homicides is comparably low. But that doesn't mean everyone feels safe.

"Abilene is a safe place, it's a good town, but there's always going to be some people who are going to break the law," said Jeff Groban.

Jeff just upgraded his home security system because he knows that incidents can and will happen, despite the low numbers.

"In any town you deal with  there's going to be homicides and things that go wrong," he said. "It's just more of a peace of mind thing."

But both agreed that they feel safe in Abilene.

"It's just the small town feel about it. I just feel like it's safe to be here."
