APD: Man Kicks Nurse in Stomach, Bites Officer

Yesterday morning at about 9:15, Officer Jeff Farley was dispatched to a forgery call in progress at a business in the 100 block of Sayles Boulevard. APD Dispatch was notified that a male suspect was passing a check on a closed account belonging to another person. The suspect's description was broadcast to patrol units. The suspect then fled from the store and was last seen running behind the store by an observant employee. Officer Farley located the suspect in the 300 block of Meander Street and detained him. The suspect was identified by the employee as the man that attempted to pass the bogus check. The man was arrested on the felony charge of forgery.
Yesterday at about 5:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a robbery that just occurred at a business in the 1600 block of Highway 351. APD Dispatch was notified by a loss prevention employee that he had attempted to contact a male subject for alleged shoplifting. After the employee identified himself to the subject, the subject struck the employee and fled on foot in a northerly direction. The employee contacted APD and provided the suspects direction of travel. Officers were advised that the subject had stolen cellphones prior to his getaway. A K-9 unit, composed of Officer Kevin Pyeatt and his K-9 Shadow, were tasked to start a track of the suspect. The team faced the reality that the subject had a 30-minute head start. Assisted by Sgt. Jason Haak, the track of the suspect proved fairly ominous to the team because of the high weeds and thick brush. The track lasted for approximately one-half mile but Shadow led the officers straight towards the subject. As Shadow and the team closed in on the subject, the subject lunged from his hiding position in the thick weeds and was immediately detected. Sgt. Haak gave verbal orders to the man to stop, but had to chase and subdue the subject. The subject was arrested in an open field adjacent to the 1300 block of East Lowden. Stolen merchandise valued at approximately $295 was recovered. The subject was identified by the store employee as the offender that committed the assault. The subject was warned not to return to the store and arrested for robbery and evading arrest.
Late last night just before midnight, Officer Anthony Joeris was at Hendrick Medical Center (HMC) investigating an assault that had occurred earlier between two males. During that assault investigation, a male subject had been detained by the male victim pending police arrival. Officer Joeris' investigation revealed that the male subject had indicators of intoxication that warranted medical attention. An ambulance was summoned to the location of the assault in the 700 block of Barrow Street. The male subject appeared to be incoherent and was taken to HMC for treatment by ambulance. The assault victim had refused to press charges and signed a release. While at HMC, the male subject freed himself from his soft restraints and became violent. A nurse and an APD officer attempted to restrain the man again to prevent further violence. The subject then kicked the nurse in the stomach and then bit the officer before being subdued. The subject was eventually released by medical authority and arrested for the charges of assault on a peace officer and assault on an emergency services personnel.
