Many industries have been affected by the economy, causing business and consumers to cut back in many areas...including funerals.

"In the past two or three years, people have become very concerned about cost. And I've become very concerned about cost", says funeral director, David Girdner.

David Girdner runs the Girdner Funeral Home and told us he's noticed shifting trends over the past few years, "I think that's one reason we've seen the increase in cremation".

Funeral directors, like Girdner, suggest cutting cost by using personal items, such as jewelry boxes, or even a purse in place of an urn that can cost upwards of $70.

Choices for funeral additions range from designer caskets to simple coffins. "We call them a cowboy casket, it's just a plain, pine casket", Girdner explains.

While making funeral pre-arrangements were the norm in decades past, Girdner tells us the modern funeral isn't really a funeral at all, rather, more like a simple celebration of life.

"They appeal to the younger people more. They are different than the old funeral traditions", says Girdner.

However, even with a shaky economy, funeral homes won't be going out of business anytime soon.

The Girdner Funeral Home told us cremation requests are at an all time high. They encourage people to make funeral pre-arangements to lock in prices and save money in the long run.
