Though currently weak and extremely malnourished, the abandoned horses are doing well, all things considered.

"It was pretty much ribs, hips and bones. And as you can see today he has put on weight. He is going to turn out to be a nice little horse", says Lynn Scholtz of the Abilene Animal Shelter about one of the horses.

The nineteen horses had a medical exam today, "We will get the ones that need it on some antibiotics, otherwise it's just mainly good nutrition", Dr. Bolt tells us.

Cuts, bruises, and emaciated frames are a concern at the moment. The horses are now on a specialized program to get them on a fast track to health. The doctor is also concerned about the possibility of foreign diseases.

"We need to find out what diseases we need to be looking for that they might be carrying. I know we will want to check for Equine Aids", Dr. Bolt explains.

Once back to health? Forever homes. The animal shelter tells us there are many interested people looking to adopt.

At this point in time, the horses are under close watch. But within 30 days, and once they have been cleared of all disease, they will be up for adoption.

One of the abandoned horses passed away; however, there looks to be a happy ending in sight for the rest.

The Abilene Animal Shelter tells us it will be several weeks before the horses are fully recuperated. The hearing for this case will be held this Friday at the Eastland County Courthouse. Suspects are still under investigation.
