Abilene residents are celebrating the Juneteenth holiday with several events.

June 19 is the anniversary of the date in 1865 when Union troops landed in Texas and informed the slaves that the end of the Civil War also signaled the end of slavery.

An event at the G.V. Daniels Recreation Center includes free health screenings and information from various organizations.

Another Juneteenth celebration is being this afternoon at Stevenson Park in northeast Abilene.
