Cisco Officials Testing Lake Bernie Water After Train Derailment

By: BigCountryHomePage.com Staff Reports
Updated: June 20, 2012
Railroad officials now say they don't believe chemicals dumped by a derailed train in Cisco made it into Lake Bernie.

Union Pacific now says a few of its cars cracked after derailing Sunday, causing soda-ash, lime and gypsum to enter a creek.

A spokesperson for Union Pacific initially reported that methanol and petroleum were making their way into the lake via a nearby creek, but now say the chemicals were able to stay contained within their tanks.

Officials don't believe nearby Lake Bernie to be affected by the spill, but have sent water samples in for testing that should be available by Thursday.

Union Pacific has been cooperating with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality to make sure the area is safe.

They now have most of the chemicals contained in one area, and say repairs on the tracks and bridge should take a few weeks to complete.

HazMat Experts and Firefighters petition Dow Chemical and Union Pacific for safe rail tank cars transporting gas chlorine. Secondary containment is a necessary improvement that must be implemented. See--PETITION C KIT for First Responders Comments.
