Cisco Petitions for Alcohol Sales After Stripes Wants to Build Truck Stop

"Just the sales tax revenue alone will be a huge benefit to us," said executive director of the chamber of commerce in Cisco, Bridget Flores.
After years without the sale of alcohol, the chamber of commerce has started a petition in Cisco after being approached by stripes, who wants to build a truck stop off of I-20 only if they can sell alcohol.
"They make so much profit off the beer and wine sales. So really it is detrimental and will be so beneficial to the growth and development of Cisco," said Flores.
After the city increased property tax, the sales tax from alcohol could also help Cisco residents pay a little less on their own taxes.
"They have to get our tax money somewhere, so if they aren't getting it based off of our sales tax, they're going to get it off of property tax," Flores said.
Having alcohol for sale closer to the city could make driving in the area a little safer as well.
"Both the police department and the fire department said if they only had to travel a block or a mile to get their beer, they would wait until they got home and it would cut down on that traffic to Putnam and ranger and people drinking and driving."
Even though some residents are against the petition, saying it could hurt the moral quality of Cisco, the people behind the alcohol sales say it could be for the good of Cisco.
"As a Cisco native," Flores said. "I would just like people to be aware of the fact that I wouldn't back something or put my neck on the line for something that I didn't think would be beneficial to our community."
Flores also said that the sale of beer and wine would allow for more restaurants and businesses to come to Cisco that wouldn't otherwise because they couldn't sell alcohol.
