The award is based on a scale, which considers points scored for your team at the Championships, as well as assigning values for meet/venue records and top performance times. Cunningham won both the 400-meter hurdles and the 400 dash in leading the War Hawks' team to the NCAA III men's title. Cunningham also had the nation's top qualifying times in both events.
Cunningham earned the USTFCCA's South/South Region "Athlete of the Year" award for a second-consecutive time in 2012, as well. In all, Cunningham earned a total of 11 All-America awards - and four national championships - during his career in the Maroon & Black.
"Kevin is a very special young man," McM head coach Barbara Crousen<http://www.mcmurrysports.com/staff.aspx?staff=6> said. "His gifts as an athlete are well-documented. But he was also a team leader; the heart-and-soul of our team who led by example.
"This award is a testament to all that Kevin meant to our program and couldn't have gone to a more deserving person."
