Moreno Family Rasies Money for Alert Dog with 5K

By: Kristin Anderson
Updated: June 23, 2012
A 5k walk and run today helped raise money for a diabetic alert service dog for two young girls.

The Moreno sisters, who are 8 and 10 years old, both have type one diabetes. Their family is hoping to purchase a dog to help keep their blood sugars at a consistent level. Today's 5k saw a steady flow of people coming to participate or to simply donate to the cause. The girls' mother said that the community support is helping keep her daughters healthy.

"It could possibly save one of their lives one day. They're trained to detect changes in blood sugar through scent and can prevent long-term complications," said McKenna Moreno.

The fundraising efforts of McKenzie and Thalia continue with a zumbathon July 21st at the University Church of Christ.
