Radio Field Day Prepares for Emergencies

By: Kristin Anderson
Updated: June 23, 2012
One Abilene club is using a contest as practice that could keep residents safe in bad weather.

The key city amateur radio club is participating in a day-long field day contest, where participants set up radios at a location and set up pretending there is no power due to storms, and contacts stations all over the world for points. This contest helps prepare radio broadcasters in case of severe weather emergencies so they can keep the public informed.

"Set things up, get the gear out, practice bringing things out to a separate location other than in our homes. And it just lets us practice doing something we wouldn't normally do," said Ron Harden, president of the Key City Amateur Radio Club.

The club meets every second Monday of the month at 7pm at the Chavez center.
