Former First Lady to Speak in Abilene

A local nonprofit whose work stretches from Abilene to Africa will welcome a big name at an annual event later this year.

Global Samaritan announced Tuesday that former First Lady Laura Bush will be the keynote speaker at their benefit dinner in October.

She was enamored by the group's humanitarian goals, such as shipping a tractor to Swaziland to help college students work on a farm to raise money for college.

Executive Director Danny Sims says it was as simple as writing Mrs. Bush a letter:

"We told her we do Christian humanitarian work, everything from logistics and shipping to disaster relief," Sims says.

Mrs. Bush will speak in Abilene on October 9 at the Abilene Civic Center, so there's plenty of time to secure a seat.

Tickets go on sale August 1.
