Bangs police helped a pregnant woman in labor Wednesday evening after she attempted to drive herself to the hospital.

According to Bangs Police Chief Troy Gruesendorf, Officer Ughanze made a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 67 and Farm Market Road 1849 Wednesday evening around 9:00.

The driver of the vehicle told police that she was in labor and the officer realized that there was evidence to support her claim and that there was a toddler in the car with her. Gruesendorf said that the woman was apparently attempting to drive herself to the hospital.

The officer made the determination that the woman was not able to safely drive herself to the hospital and immediately called for medical help. First responders, Bangs Volunteer Fire Department and officer Ughanze offered her medical help.

Gruesendorf stated that the woman was offered transport by Guardian EMS to Brownwood Regional Medical Center; however opted to travel with someone who arrived by privately-owned vehicle. Gruesendorf said that the woman arrived safely to deliver her baby.

"Officer Ughanze did an excellent job, this is just one way we keep our community safe," said Chief Gruesendorf. "My officers have done a great job being proactive, being alert and staying out actively patrolling until 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning. Because of this, we don't have a volume of crime as in the past, I give Patrol Supervisor Officer Kelley credit for implementing these patrols."
