Crews Extinguish Fires Possibly Caused by Fireworks

A late night grass fire threatened homes near Lake Fort Phantom Thursday night.

Crews were able to contain the fire fairly quickly on East Lake Road, preventing any injury or property damage.

Neighbors and firefighters say they saw fireworks being set off before and during the fire, but the cause is still being investigated.

Crews also worked to put out hot spots from a small fire along Potosi Road that they believe was started by fireworks, but the Taylor County Sheriff's Office is investigating to determine the official cause.

Crews say even though there is no burn ban, conditions are right for fires this July 4.

Taylor County Commissioner Chuck Statler says the commissioners will consider reinstating a ban on outdoor burning, including fireworks, at Tuesday's meeting.
