APD to Provide Traffic Enforcement During Fireworks Display

By: Officer George Spindler, APD
Updated: July 3, 2012
On the evening of Wednesday July 4, a fireworks display is being presented at Grover Nelson Park located in the southeast part of Abilene and adjacent to the Abilene Zoo. The Abilene Police Department (APD) will be present at the park and in adjoining areas, including the Taylor County Expo Center, to facilitate traffic enforcement in and out of this event.

Starting at 7:00 p.m., APD officers will also be patrolling the park during this event.

We remind our community, and any Abilene visitors, that the possession of alcoholic beverages in the park is prohibited.

The use and possession of fireworks of any kind within the city limits of Abilene are also prohibited.

Police Officers will be strictly enforcing the laws that govern the use or possession of alcohol and fireworks and we ask that every community member refrain from any such activity.

Doing so will prevent anyone from being cited for the offense and ensure the safety of all those attending this event.

We ask everyone to apply patience when the event ends and as they begin to leave the area. As typical with this type of event, heavy traffic congestion is predicted and will require the direction of traffic flow from APD officers.

Those attending this event should be prepared to deal with lines of traffic flow that will be deliberately diverted as needed to ensure the safety and efficient flow of motorists departing the event. Two specific traffic flow detours are planned as follows: 1) traffic leaving from the Expo Center's main entrance will be required to turn right onto E. S. 11th Street, and 2) traffic leaving from Nelson Park's main entrance will be required to turn right onto E. S. 11th Street. Other
contingencies involving traffic flow may be developed as needed.

We hope that with everyone's cooperation and adherence to the law that everyone will have an enjoyable and safe event to remember.
