Local VFW Honors Country with Flag Raising Ceremony

By: Kristin Anderson
Updated: July 4, 2012
The local VFW started the celebration of America's birthday early Wednesday morning.

Members of the post participated in the 4th Annual Flag Raising Ceremony in honor of the country, and those who serve.

The veterans say ceremonies like this are important because it symbolizes what the flag means to Veterans of Foreign Wars.

"The flag is always a symbol of what you're fighting for," says Post 6873 Commander Leroy Heynes. "It's the reason why we exist as a veteran's organization. It's the reason why we exist as a country. You know it symbolizes all the strife and heartache that people before us have went through."

The VFW is continuing the celebration with free food and activities at the post all day.
