Abilene Animal Shelter Sees Spike in Dogs on the Loose

By: Gina Benitez
Updated: July 5, 2012
Each year after the 4th of July, the Abilene Animal Shelter sees a large spike in the number of animals they go and pick up.

Whether deceased, lost or aggressive, shelter officials tie this trend to the loud boom of fireworks.

Wednesday night, an animal control officer was on duty for nine hours of strictly emergency calls. The shelter has already picked up about 20 animals between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon and still expect more.

"We check those trends every year and we see that spike. Right around the 4th of July," says Aaron Vannoy of the Abilene Animal Shelter. "Sometimes it's July 3rd, some days it's the 4th and some days its the 5th. It's just a matter of when all those fireworks are going off."
