Out of Brownwood comes a story of strength and courage, in the midst of a nightmare. Petty Officer First Class Cody Williams of the United States Navy, was riding in a Humvee in Afghanistan when he was hit by an explosive device, leaving him with shrapnel wounds all over his body, as well as serious back injuries.

Williams graduated from Brownwood High School in 2004. Peter Romig was one of his teachers, "I remember he was a friendly kid, he took care of business, he wasn't in trouble", says Romig.

Retired military, Tom Denison speaks on behalf of the Brownwood community when he says Williams has their support and prayers. "I don't know him personally, but any military man that's served in a combat zone, deserves all the respect he can get. And Brownwood will be behind him", Denison tells us.

"We wish him the very best and hope he recovers, and I know he'll want to come home", says Romig.

The community also has plans to send cards and encouraging letters to Williams. But until then, he is awaiting transfer to a hospital in San Diego.

Williams' parents say they are not ready to go on camera at this time, as they just heard the news last night and are still in shock and upset. However, they are thankful their son is alive.
