A woman charged with embezzling over $500,000 from her employer is being sentenced in an Abilene court today.

The Abilene Police Department began investigating the former office manager of Spine Abilene early in 2011.

Heather Smith was arrested and charged with felony theft after it was revealed she was stealing money from the company. She pleaded guilty and in her Friday sentencing hearing it was revealed just how much money she took, and what she spent it on.

Smith spent over $225,000 with company credit cards, another $84,000 she deposited into checking accounts. Police suspect she is responsible for another $200,000 of the company's money that they have not yet been able to verify.

Police say she used money from Spine Abilene to open a post office box which the credit card statements were sent to.

In total, police believe Smith embezzled over half a million dollars from Spine Abilene.

Police say she spent most of it on eating out, clothes and her membership to the Abilene Country Club.

Smith is facing probation to 99 years in prison.
