BROWNWOOD - Brittany Roberson, a senior women's basketball player at Howard Payne University, will have her jersey displayed in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame's "Ring of Honor" in Knoxville, Tenn., during the 2012-2013 season.
Roberson, a Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American guard, will join an elite group honored by the WBHOF since it opened in 1999. Currently there are more than 100 jerseys hanging in the Ring of Honor, including high school and college All-Americans from the 2011-2012 season.
"The Ring of Honor is one of our favorite displays at the Hall of Fame and it has become one of our most popular exhibits as well," said Josh Sullivan, director of basketball relations at the Hall of Fame. "Not only does the Ring of Honor provide a colorful backdrop to the Hall of Fame's many archives, but it is also our way of recognizing some young basketball players for their achievements in the sport."
Roberson earned the title of ASC West Division Player of the Year and ASC Female Athlete of the Year after averaging 13.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game for the Lady Jacket basketball team. She also shot 48.8 percent from the field and led the league in 3-point percentage, connecting on 28 of 59 tries from beyond the arc. Roberson, who was selected to the All-Division first team, was also named to the prestigious six-player ASC All-Conference Team. She was named 2nd Team All-South Region by D3hoops.com.
"We are very proud of Brittany's tremendous accomplishments last season," said Dr. Bill Ellis, university president. "She, and all of the Lady Jackets, did a great job and we are thrilled that she is receiving this well-deserved and prestigious recognition."
Roberson will return to HPU this fall to finish a few courses toward her degree in exercise and sport science, but her career with the Lady Jackets has come to an end. She has secured an agent and is looking into opportunities to continue playing basketball with a league overseas.
"I just wanted to help the Lady Jackets succeed," Roberson said. "I'm proud of the things we've accomplished. It was a great experience, and I wish I could have had more years to play here."
