Junior Volunteers at Hendrick Get Real World Experience

"I want to be a vet," said Kimery Hankins.

Sixteen year old Kimery is spending her summer volunteering to help get experience for a job she wants in the future.

"I've always like animals and by volunteering at a hospital, I thought that that might help just to see what doing on people, maybe, might correlate to being a vet," she said.

The junior volunteer program has 45 students, who provide a total of 1400 hours in eight weeks, giving them real world experience while learning about a field that they're interested in.

"Some of them that work at the nurses stations, they see the doctors, they see the nurses, they see it in action every day. So it gives them an idea of what they're facing and what they're looking at," said Marsha Brigman, manager of volunteer services.

And in her three years volunteering at Hendrick, Kimery has also had some opportunities to work in other parts of the hospital, including some work with animals.

"I've done some of the pet therapy. That was really interesting because, normally, when I think of a hospital I don't think of pets normally," she explained. "But when they go out and just let the people pet the dogs, it's really fun and interesting."

The hours spent at the hospital will also help down the road.

"By doing this now, you're put in a situation that people work normally. So this might help by me getting a job later on," said Kimery.

Interested volunteers can apply at any time for next summer, and outreach will begin next April.
