Joe Salinas is passionate about shining a light on topics that many may shy away from. Which is exactly why he organized "Bullies for Autism", a community event with a dual purpose.
"We are here to educate people about autism and some of the close friends who are affected by the disorder, it's a pretty widespread spectrum, the other side of what we're doing is trying to education the public about the breed of the American Bullies and American Pitbull Terriers", says Salinas.
And the inspiration behind the event? Junior Hernandez, a young boy who lives with autism. Joe Hernandez is his father. "Joe [Salinas] being so willing to do something like this touches me and my family, and it helps again for the cause, which is autism", says Hernandez.
Over 100 American Bullies participated in various events, including weight pulling, and were judged in different categories, such as best in show, and even biggest head.
"It gives people a different view of Pits. A lot of people see them very aggresive and fighting, but that's not how they are, they're real loving", says Felicia Ivarra, dog owner.
All participants payed an entree fee with proceeds benefiting the Autism Speaks Foundation. People also wanted to show the community that the normally shunned breed of dog, is a gentle pet when treated well.
Folks of many ages told us they are already looking forward to the event next year.
