Rodney Young recognized this trend and decided to make a business out of it. "Mobile technology is coming, it's really strong. Everyone has a cell phone one way or another. And just about everybody will admit that they're not more than three feet away from it all day long", explains Young.
He says that this form of direct marketing is embraced in many metropolitan areas, and it's just a matter of time before businesses in the Big Country see the value of instantaneous marketing.
"There is still a lot of direct mail around, but overall, the strong curves that I see and the research I've done, actually shows that things like the internet and the mobile marketing are going to go more and more", says Young.
Zookini's uses text message marketing to attract customers to enter contests and receive coupons as an incentive for more patronage.
Jon Harper is the assistant manager, "Competitiveness in the business that we're in means it's really the better edge we have on them to do something else is better, and being able to reach customers through something as simple as a text message is really unique", says Harper.
Young is completely self taught, in fact, before he started his company a little over a year ago, he had only sent four text messages in his entire life.
Young views Abilene as the perfect market segment for his company, as there are so many small businesses, but until high-tech marketing catches on, he always has the internet to draw in more business.
Zookini's tells us that they will continue using their text message campaign, as they have noticed a bump in business ever since they started targeting customers via cell phones.
