They're definitely not the fastest animal at the Abilene Zoo, but there's more to Mikey the Box Turtle than meets the eye. Joy Harsh with the Abilene Zoo explains Mikey's habitat.

"They are extremely fast.", explains Harsh. She adds, "The warmer they are the faster they move. As all reptiles as they warm up they are able to move faster so you normally don't see turtles out in the winter. They are down hibernating."

Harsh says, "He eats all sorts of things. He is an omnivore so he gets meat and crickets and eggs and he likes fruits and veggies too. Before we came on the air he got fed a worm. He thinks worms are awesome."

She explains, "Male box turtles have red eyes , the females have brown and you can tell if it's a Box Turtle by they have a special little hinge that allows them to completely close up inside of their shell."
