"They told us we could go ahead and stop it because we were going to lose money," Explains Hawley Superintendent Glenn Coles.

Virtually non-existent participation numbers have forced Hawley ISD to end it's free summer food program, at least for this year.

"The biggest day we had was three kids," says Coles.

The low numbers don'tsuggest that there isn't a need for the program in Hawley.
Hawley Superintendent Glenn Coles says many outside factors played a role in the decision to close the program, including the districts decision to do away with summer school while standards for the state's new STARR tests continue to be determined.

"Because of the new testing for our elementary and middle school there was no longer a promotion requirement, so we didn't have summer school," Coles said.

And with no summer school, Coles says many students just don't have a need to be at school, or the transportation to get them there.
