The Abilene Fire Department can now purchase new bunker gear. The department will buy forty sets of the protective coats, pants and helmets from a company called Fire-Dex. Each set costs about $1,800, with the total cost exceeding $70,000.
The council also approved a request to buy a new excavator. City officials say it was no longer cost-effective to repair the older machine and keep it running. The excavator is used to clean out the creeks, which in turn keeps the storm water flowing and reduces the danger of flooding.
