Hejny, who will be a senior for McM in the 2013, played the bulk of the summer for Brisbee (Ariz.) Ironmen. The reliever tossed 31 2/3 innings and amassed seven saves. Hejny also had a 3.12 earned run average, along with a 38 strikeout-to-13 walks ratio.
Brisbee lost in the Kino League championship game. Once his team's season was over, Hejny - who had gained the attention of the Cotton Kings' staff after he tossed four shutout innings against them during the regular season - was invited to join the Casa Grande team to fill a vacant roster spot for their stretch run. Casa Grande won the Pacific Southwest League championship and the right to advance to Wichita for the NBC World Series.
Hejny's success is certainly no surprise to any McMurry University baseball faithful. As a junior in 2012, he had a 3.80 ERA in 21 1/3 innings of work. Hejny collected five of the War Hawks' six saves on the year and opponents hit just .244 against him.
